Leave a gift in my will
What is a Legacy?
A legacy or a bequest in your Will is one of the more traditional forms of giving to charity but remains a very important one. There are two types of bequests:
A residuary bequest
Is a gift of the remainder of a person's estate after all other bequests have been made and debts have been cleared
A pecuniary bequest
Is a gift of a fixed sum of money
You can also leave a specific gift such as jewellery, an antique, or even your house. It is easy and straightforward to leave money to St Peter & St James in any of these ways.
What are the benefits?
A bequest to charity enables you to make a planned gift to a charity you care about, whilst ensuring that any dependants are provided for. Legacies have always played a vital part in funding our work. For many people this is one of the easiest ways to support a charity because funds may not allow you to make gifts during your lifetime.
All gifts in your Will to charity are free of inheritance tax.
Where do I go from here?
Your solicitor will be able to advise you on all matters relating to your Will. We strongly advise you to use a solicitor when making or changing your Will as this will ensure that your instructions and wishes are carried out as intended. Solicitors are best qualified to explain the types of bequests that can be made and the language that must be used when writing a Will.
